    Pont Du Gard

    August 1, 2018

The Pont Du Gard is one of the biggest aqueducts of the Roman Empire. It was built from the year 38 until 52 by around 1000 workers. This bridge is a part of a 50km long aqueduct build to supply the city “Nemausus” – The current Nimes – with 35.000 cubic meters (or 35 million litres) water a day.

    Fun facts:

    • The difference in height between the two sides of the bridge is only  2.5 cm
    • The average gradient for the 50km construction was 23 cm / km, so that the water ran to the city by itself
    • It has been built with 50.000 tonnes of locally mined limestone
    • Even in 1830 there were vandalists carving their name into the bridge
